“You want me to do what?” Sophie asked in the kitchen the next morning. She was upset to learn her father was missing.

“If you can’t get him on the phone, go to his house and go through his paperwork. I’m looking for a schedule of when he makes his urine pickups each week so I can trace his movements. You get along with Cindy, right? She won’t mind if you look through his stuff.”

Cindy was Buddy’s latest girlfriend and payer of his monthly mortgage bill. No matter whom he had a relationship with, they always ended up footing most of his bills. It was a remarkable talent of his, really.

“Yeah, yeah. I get it. Sorry, but I’m kind of freaked out about this news.”

“I hope he had to go out of town for something. But I want to look for him if he doesn’t contact us.”

“Okay. I’ll go to Cindy’s when we’re done with breakfast service. I think she works nights now, so she should be home.”

“Thank you.”

I grabbed a chafing dish filled with fresh slices of French toast. When I carried it from the kitchen, I got a nasty surprise.

Detective Siwicki stood in the foyer.

“You got a moment?” he asked.

“Let me drop this off, and I’ll be right back.”

I carried the steel dish into the dining room, placed it in the rack on the buffet table, and lit the butane burner beneath it. Then, I reluctantly returned to Siwicki.

“How can I help you?”

“Have you seen Buddy Grimes? We had some questions for him, but his attorney said he went AWOL. He’s not at his house. Has he contacted you?”

“No. His attorney called me last night, and I’m very worried about him.”

“Where should I look for him?”

“I don’t know. But I do know this: Buddy did not shoot his partner.”

Siwicki smirked.

“You should believe me. I had a vision of Damon Borgia’s death—of a man I didn’t recognize shooting him from another car. I would have thought Buddy’s attorney had told you. If Buddy told him, that is.”

“Sure, they’re cooking up an elaborate fairy tale. Are you telling me you got this from that kooky psychic nonsense you did in his car?”

“Yes. I read Damon’s memories. I’m a psychometrist. That’s a real thing. You can look it up on the internet if you can figure out how to spell it.”

“So, you ‘saw’ some guy shoot him?”

“Yes. In Damon’s mind, he referred to him as the Emerald Man. Does that name ring a bell with you?”

“If it did, I wouldn’t tell you because of your association with the defendant.”

“Looks like I’m more generous of a person than you are. I’ll also share with you that Damon had a girlfriend who was a patient at a sober home called The Shady Palms Apartments. Management took her away to some ranch outside of town. I think it’s called Hard Ridge Ranch. Turns out, they take a lot of their patients to this ranch, and no one ever sees them again. Is this also news to you?”

He smirked again.
